actually it turns out that I think I got a defective unit. I can't get ANY effects out of it no matter how I connect it. I tried direct to my amp, through my mixer, computer, headphones, pretty much everything I could think of - different cables, different guitar. The lights work, and when I put it in bypass, the signal is routed through and I get a clean signal passed out of it, but as soon as I select any effect it kills the sound. I tried resetting it multiple times and that didn't help either. I am going to exchange it and get a working one. This was actually one of the FAQ's on line6's website so it must be a fairly common problem.

I got a new one and it works perfectly, even the mixer setup. The only problem now is all the noise from my mixer which I guess I can live with
