I would be impressed if you could play the guitar for twenty+ years and not run across theory. In the least, it had to come up during some conversation with Tim. I mean Christ, who knows how many millions of times he's spoken with the guy about the guitar.

not to mention the other 4 experienced musicians in the band and Butch.

Hey guys. Whoaa, big gulps huh? Alright... well, see ya later.
He has to know a little theory. Though I dont think he knows too much. Just screwing around on the fret board gets me a lot of the music for my songs. And I bet dave does that for some of this stuff. Though some of his songs are almost impossible to just come across, you have to be trying to get Billies. But Gravedigger and Where Are You Going could have been created by accident if you know what I mean.
I read that he actually has little knowledge regarding music theory, and this surprises other musicians when they jam with him. He's even stated that the electric guitar is sort of foreign to him.
I saw in an interview that the first time he picked up an electric guitar wasnt to long before he started recording some devil. I may be wrong about the time he first picked up the electric but I mainly remember he hasnt been playing it very long.

UMmm, there was this album called everday that came out in early 2001, figure in time for recording and what not....ya, you are way off. Unles he started recording some devil in 2001, then i'd be way off.
When you best friend is showing you chords and licks and his name happens to be Tim Reynolds I can only imagine you would pick up a lot.
After years of practice, jamming and touring I'm confident that Dave knows his way around the guitar and in creating music using the same rules as we all do.
