Grey Street on 12-string

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

I wouldn't base my entire arguement on that picture. It's a small image and low resolution. Of course you can clearly see that there is the octave string on the low E because that octave string, compared to the other octaves, has a larger diameter. If you look REALLY closely you can almost see the the octave on the A string but it blurs because its a poor capture. My advice is to listen to the second take of Spoon from Storytellers - you can clearly hear he's playing all 12.

I'm not trying to be an ass, honestly, but think about this: even for sound purposes, what would be the point of only putting the octave string on the low E?

for the cool sound, to be different, why not? have you ever tried it? with a song like spoon, where he plays the e-string a lot, maybe it produces a cool sound. my advice for YOU is to watch the storytellers video. he is most certainly playing a 12-string with only the low-e strung up doubled.

I trust my ear, and my ear believes that its fully strung 12 string guitar that he's playing.

You're trusting your eyes to a crappy image and a video that shows a split-second of his 12-string. Play a 12-string and listen to the mp3 of the second take....even with Tim playing you can tell he has all 12-strings. I've been playing my twelver for 5 years now and I know one when I hear it.

You wouldn't gain much in a creative sound by just placing the octave on the low E only. You might as well just play a sixer.

I suppose it's time to just agree to disagree. Obviously the only way to settle this is to ask Dave yourself and we all know that is going to happen.

For you classic SNL fans out there...

Chris Farley: "Dave, you remember that time....when you were with Tim Reynolds....and you played Spoon?

Dave Matthews: "Yeah...I sure do."

Chris Farley: "That was cool!"

Peace,

Kev

i refuse, haha. all im saying is if you watch the video (which is definitely not bad quality), you can see that it's only on the low e. i would bet my children's life on it (well ok, maybe not, thats a little extreme, but you get the point). the quality of the video is a thousand times better than the quality of the audio.

Hahaha well I really wouldn't bet my children's life on this if I were you...

I just went back and watched the video again at max resolution and full screen. If you do this and pause and look...and I mean look....you can make out the octaves on almost all of the four bass strings. It's very difficult to do because that segment of video...for some reason....was shot in grayscale. You can barely make out the B and high E at all - should we assume he took those and their octaves (which are actually just tuned the same) off his guitar all together?

It would be a creative sound but then again he sure does hit the high strings in that song...

Trust me, they are there.

I just can't man. i dont have storytellers on my computer, i have the tape of it, and when i watch it (which i have over and over again tonight, kinda getting sick of those 30 seconds, haha) i just don't see any other octave strings on there, just the low e. and obviously we're never going to agree on it, so yeah, whatever, not like it really matters.

I was there for both nights, it kicked ass, me and my friends stayed in a local campground right by and everyone there were dave fans. It was so cool, we got to hear all the songs from the lillywhite sessions for the first time they were ever played.

Well that last post was completely irrelevant to our arguement! For a minute there I thought he was going to say he had been at Storyteller and had in fact seen all 12 glorious strings.

Just kidding!

It is a good 30 seconds of video though isn't it? You see if VH1 didn't suck so much not only would we have a nice, clear, crisp, and color video of the show but we would also have gotten to see him perform the WHOLE song!

They could have tossed in a few of the other 22 songs on that set!

If you're going to air a D&T performance - DO IT RIGHT!
