tune your low E so that it sounds the same as the A on the 7th fret.. what i mean by that is hold the E on the 7th fret and tune it down so it becomes the same sound as an open A

lol.. i think if you do a search Jsgksu posted something about drop d tuning before.. it might be simpler than what I said.. Basicly place your finger on the 7th fret as opposed to the 5th and tune the E string so it sounds the same. You're now D A D G B E tuning

because an E on the 7th fret is and A, remove your finger from the 7th fret and it becomes a D

So just to get it straight....fret the low E on the 7th fret and tune until it sounds the same as open A?

Indeed.. it'll then be tuned D A D G B E making you in drop d tuning.. I have a great ear and don't even need to touch any frets to tune anymore..

I do it with the harmonic on the 12th fret of the low E
