Pop Screens

Post by whatshername »

I was at the music store today looking at shit for my mic..and I was gonna buy a pop screen that would clamp on to it but it was like 35 bucks that I didn't feel like spending. The guy said I could make one anyways. So a little while ago I got a wire hanger, used some pliers to shape it, and then I was going to put a piece of thin nylon over the circular part. But my dad saw what I was doing and said he had something for me that would work just as good. He gave me an extra circular piece of thin foam that had elastic on it. It came with his Turtle Wax thing. So we put that over it and it works perfectly. A pop screen for the pretty much the price of a hanger. I'm going to get a real one, but I was bored and I love making stuff. Here's pics:

hey if you can do it yourself it's always better and more satisfying then using something you have to spend money on.

That's why if I was talented I would fashion my own guitar 8-)

nice work, it ought to work as good if not better than a real one...my dad literally built a mic stand for my drummer when his broke the day before a show out of pvc pipe and wooden dowels...nothing like going ghetto

Nice job Whit.
I've done some of the same kind of stuff.
Examples.

PVC Djembe Stand--- Attach bongos with old belt
Angle Iron microphone T-bar for stereo micing

Both of these work better than I can imagine and cost a total of $33. I was looking at $85 for a djembe stand and $95 for a mic rig.

You know what works great as a pop screen? A wall. Seriously, zero pops. </sarcasm> My point is that it is trivial to put something in the way that blocks the burts of air that cause "pops" but the real design criteria is that it should be acoustically transparent otherwise. If you can't tell the difference between with and without the screen, then good job, otherwise, it is just a wall. There are lots of materials you can use, but the ones you buy have at least some amount of thought put into this (some more than others).

um, I would hope that you *could* tell the difference. If not, then it wouldn't be doing its job...right? I have a $5 pop screen that I bought, and it makes a huge difference. My friend has one that he made with pantyhose and a coat hanger, and it makes a huge difference. I'm not really sure what you're trying to say.

He was trying to say that he comes around here every once in a while and tries to flex his E-Dick about recording stuff, because he does know a lot.

Come on, he's saying that while a pop screen can block out pops, it can also hurt the quality of recordings if it's blocking out the full range of acoustics produced by whatever you're recording. He's not "flexing his e-dick", he's making a valid point.
