ummm, going to have to go ahead and say no to that. I have had everything jack recorded stuffed down my throat by my ex and it is just so very basic. Just because he throws a semi-complicated riff into a small few of his songs does not mean he is a guitar hero. I'll give him credit for writing some catchy tunes, but he is no master by any means. Just because it is popular does not mean it is good. I mean, green day is popular.

And in all honesty green day is a good band and billie joe is a good guitarist. listen to 1,039. he lays down some good licks on that album and wrote everything on the newest album. The guy from pinhead gunpowder might play the leads live, but billie joe wrote them all. I can think of much worse musicians in popular music right now.

I agree to a point. But I feel the same about billy joe as I do about jack johnson: catchy songs but in no way a "guitar hero". He is good at what he does, but I don't think anything green day has done, or the majorty of "punk rock" has done, anything spectacular with their instruments. You are right that there are much worse musicians in popular music right now, but I think green day's sucess in the '90s has paved the way for all the crap we are enduring right now. I know a lot of it has to do with personal taste in music and I personally hate "punk rock" as a genre. I think the attitude takes away from the advancement of music. It is all regurgitated crap, power chords and whining. It offers nothing positive to me. I would prefer to give my money to someone who actually knows how to play their instrument, not just know how to play songs. Same with Nirvana. What exactly did they do that was so revolutionary? Wear normal clothes? Play different power chords than every one else? I mean, don't get me wrong, I like some of their music but I would not call kurt a guitar hero either. To me there are only a small handful of people who have mastered the instrument to the point that they can be called hero's. wow, that was long winded.

Nirvana was the first band to really lend a melody to grunge music, which was a pretty significant step at the time. It doesn't have all that much to do with Kurt's style or anything at all to do with what they wore, but it has everything to do with the way that they sounded as a group.

That being said, you're right - Kurt isn't a guitar hero. He's just a guy who wrote some solid lyrics and was able to lend a real tune to them without moving away from being a real 'grunge' band in terms of their style.

My least favorite guitar god would have to be Timmy. I mean I love it when he plays Dave tunes, but I can't get into his solo stuff. It's too out there for me.

I tend to like alot of tims spacey stuff myself but what i like more are his acoustic solo albums. My favorite of his acoustic stuff is the album Nomadic Wavelengths. It has like 3 spacey tracks and 15 tracks of acoustic goodness. My favorite is Entity. Check is out Pearce and it might change your mind about him. He just likes to vary his music all the time and hardly comes out with the same sounding thing.
Least favorite guitar hero is probably Ynwie Malmsteen. I wouldnt consider John Mayer a guitar hero either, just a spin off of Dave.

seriously...not to start the Dave vs. Mayer argument again, but Mayer is doing things (especially now, with JM3) that Dave has never done and will never do. They are completely different types of musicians. well not completely different, but in no way is Mayer a spinoff of Dave.
