Gibson Chet Atkins SST vs. Taylor T5

Post by erikro »

Hi all,

I am trying to decide between these guitars. I can get the T5 standard for $1800 and the Chet for about $1300, maybe $1200. I have not played either one yet. I like the fact that both are thin bodied guitars. What I really want is something that I can really control the volume of. I want to be able to strum away while my son is sleeping and not worry about the guitar being too loud. It is my understanding that the Chet is a chambered body guitar and is not very loud when plugged in. I have read that the Taylor is a full hollow bodied guitar. I am assuming that it has good volume not plugged in. I am sure people with kids can relate to what I am saying. During the day isnt a big deal but at night I have to keep it down. A regular full bodied acoustic will not work. It is just too loud. I plan on playing at least the taylor this week but was hoping for some insight from people who have played both. I am also open to other suggestions as well.

Thanks
Erik

I did a search. I was also looking for some solutions to my situation. Also for a side by side comparison by people who have played both. This is a forum right? If you dont want to offer a informative response why do you write anything? I have read just about every post on this site.

My two cents:

The Chet rules in all aspects

The T5 sucks in ways only a Taylor electric guitar can.

I say the Chet for sure.

They are two totally different guitars. I have both. The T5 is much better for giging. The Chet is limited, you get one sound. The T5 with a flip of a switch you can get a different sound. In the 1st & 2nd positions you get "taylor sounds." For true acoustic tones the T5 destroys the chet. The best thing to do is play them both and see what you like.

by saying that, and no offense but have you ever heard the sound of an acoustic?

Have you played the T5 yet, or are you still going off the sound clips and vids?
