I saw in several posts that #41 would be a good first song to learn. I've only been playing about a month, and the song doesn't seem too difficult. But I have a really hard time playing the first chord.

I can't seem to make my 3rd finger reach the 5th fret for the low E while keeping my second finger on the 3rd fret of the A string. Any suggestions on how I may be able to get better at this? or is it just going to take time and a lot of practice to make the reach.

It's a tough stretch especially for a beginner. I know I struggled with those intro chords when I first started trying to play it. As I tried to play it more and more the stretch has gotten to be quite a bit easier and now I have no problems with it. When playing the verse...I just have my first finger lay on all the strings when hitting the low e...and when playing the A - just laying over all the strings and push the low e on the side to mute that with your first finger...cake...this way you can strum harder when you want to without other strings ringing out
