I have been playing guitar for about a year and although I try to play as often as I can, I still consider myself a begginer in many aspects. I find I can get the picking of songs down fairly well but I am rusty on finding an ear for strumming patterns.
Recently I've been having a lot of troubles finding a strumming pattern for the intro. of Say Goodbuy. I can get the basic sound and notes for the rest of the song but strumming the start is killing me! What is Dave doing? Please help!!!

His strumming pattern for Say Goodbye seems to change with the phases of the moon 
no seriously, it takes time just listening and practicing and practicing and listening. Try to stick to one version, say the Luther College version (hint, nudge) and listen to it, practice and play a long with it. In time you'll get it. The Album version is a bit different and other live versions are different. Does he ever play this song the same way twice ?? the lyrics change with the weather patterns too.

One suggestion to help with training to hear the strumming pattern is to use a Winamp plugin that can slow down the tempo of the song. It gives more time to process what's going on and also makes the more subtle sounds stand out a bit.
Actually, I just started to do this (using a plugin called Pacemaker) so I'm not sure how effective it is. But, I'm using it on JTR right now which was giving me trouble and I was able to figure out the pattern.
I wouldn't get too reliant on tempo slowing which is why I haven't used it until now but for those really tricky parts (or to get accuracy) it can be a big time saver.
