d16rte vs d28

Post by skpr41 »

anyone have an opinion as to the difference between the martin d16rte and the d28?

they're both east indian rosewood with sitka spruce top, but $1000 difference in price.

anyone played both? how do they compare?

thanks.

I'd pick the d-28, but that's just personal preference.

I always loved the D-28 over all other martins. It's basic sound just is right for so much, and it really gives you that rythmic sound without any flares, just a good guitar at the best basic.

yea, but whats the difference between the D16rgt and the hd-28? They are made with the same wood but the hd-28 costs twice as much.

exactly. that's what i was trying to ask.

i did play the hd-28, d-28, hd-35, and the d16rgte today. i still prefer the hd-28 over the rest. it's definitely better than the d16rgte, but is it >$1000 better?

hmmm....hard to tell.

since no one would answer this one i went to my local martin shop and asked them.

the d16rgt uses a mass produced neck joint
the hd28 neck joints are hand carved in a v shape that allows for more wood to wood contact and thus making a better tone

the d16rgt has gloss only on top
the hd28 has gloss on the back and sides which is hand applied and buffed, which adds about 400 dollars

the hd28 also has a herringbone inlay as well as a better tuning system

hope that helps

thanks for the research matt!

after playing different guitars at different stores, i'm definitely planning to hold out for the hd28.
