wow i have a crappy microphone. if it's just me then i'll admit it but i think the light palm muting makes it sound a lot more like dave (especially the KFOG performance)
i did the stone and gravedigger, i'm alomst 100% positive about gravedigger but i'll let you guys decide about the stone. on both of them the first time through is without palm muting while the second time is with it.

Left-hand muting just mutes, that's it, no variations in sound. With a good right-handed, rythmic palm-mute you can get variations from muffled, semi-muted, bassy, & some other sounds that I don't have adjectives for.

yea, not like electric guitar palm muting where you almost drone it out, but a light brush with the palm while you are strumming the opening chords.... either that or dave has a magic guitar setup.
I'm with elijah on this one, if you listen on listener supported you can definitely tell that he palm mutes it.

he definietly palm mutes grave digger.... it hink he does in alomost every song, jsut not the whole song... even satellite in lallc you can hear he does ion some verses...
IMHO, Dave does/has used palm muting on Gravedigger, as well as Stone (in some performances) and Satelite (in some performances). Your right hand does not have to be stationary to palm mute. As others have said, its just a light contact as you come down on the string with the pick. Its not muting out the string totally, just deadening the tone a little.
If Dave is doing that sound/tone with a left hand mute...I would love to see how to do this. Maybe this is the perfect topic for the 1st installation in the DMB Guitar Classes Forum!!!!!!!
I'm still having difficulty doing this. I guess I just gotta practice practice practice! I guess I'm bound to get that sound eventually.

I have to agree that Dave definately does palm mute on occasion. I've heard him do it at the very beginning of Crush on the Bm chord, also he sometimes slightly palm mutes the very begginning of the Tripping Billies intro. And on acoustic versions of Gravedigger and yes it does sound like he palm mutes the Stone sometimes I've even heard him use it on Typical Situation. Just my 2 cents.
for those of you who still disagree, download the stone from the KFOG radio performance and just llisten to the first note he plays and try to recreate the sound, it just won't sound the same if you just pick it but if you palm mute it very lightly it will sound so much more like it.
I have to agree with the palm muting here , atleast when i palm mute , i think it sounds so much closer to the " Dave " sound , than without the palm mute , on certain songs so to say
