SPAC Review

Unread post by Nitro1515 » Wed Aug 15, 2007 12:45 am

Ok first of all, crazy start to the night. For the second time since '01 I bought a fake ticket and came up with a miracle at the cancellation line. Got inside seats about 25th row, not too bad for last minute desperation. On to the show...

PNP - Rapunzel - Great way to open, right up there is BOWA and The Stone as my favorite openers

YMDT - Decent tune, could do without it though

Rhyme - Nice to see this back, it gets people going

Hunger - Ugh.

#27 - Killed the crowd, but its an alright song. Nothing special, but I kinda dig the lyrics

Warehouse w/ Toots - Great as always. Toots did some nice backup vocals with a little guitar. Louie Louie interpolation as well

The Idea Of You - This song has lost that charm that it had at the beginning of '06. I really can't get into that much anymore and Carter's incessant kick drum during the chorus is annoying.

Cornbread - Decent. I'm just glad he wrote a song with 3 parts to it again.

LIOG w/ Trey - Crowd went insane. Trey gave a great solo, but it was very strange because after the jam when Trey was done soloing, he walked off the stage and they never went back into the "I can't believe that we would..." part because the crowd was going absolutely nuts. Just a weird thing.

Some Devil (Full Band) - I did not like this at all. This needs to remain the way it was. Its an extremely depressing tune that fits perfectly when its just Dave and the baritone, it doesn't need anything more than that. Rashawn plays some muted trumpet, Leroi is not onstage during it.

The Maker - Standard

Bayou - God awful. Boyd danced around on stage like a lunatic, sawing the same note for about 5 minutes.

Shotgun - Nice to finally hear live, but it still doesn't flow right IMO

Crush - Standard, with a nice jam at the end

Sweet Up and Down - It's the reason I went and my god was I worried that it wasn't going to happen since it was getting so late in the set. Then all of a sudden the 12 string came out and I could see the chord fingering so I knew it wasn't Grey Street and BAM, pure awesomeness. It made my night.

ASTB - I hope a video of this comes out, they did this funny thing where Carter and Rashawn would give these short hits with the drum and the trumpet and Dave and Stefan would move their heads to different sides during each one and hold them there until they did it again. They repeated this multiple times. Good stuff.

Too Much - I really got into this tonight for some reason. Maybe its because I hadn't listened to it in so long, but I do love this song.

Stay - The perfect summer tune, but it needs to stop closing sets.

Encore:

Gravedigger - Awesome song

ABI - Dave screamed a lot obviously

Watchtower - Meh its Watchtower

All in all I did not really enjoy the show. That run from SD through Bayou really killed it, but I got what I came for with Sweet Up and Down so its alright. One thing I did realize during the show was just how awful Rashawn is. It was cool that he was wearing a Lawrenece Taylor jersey tonight and all, but dear god does he ruin some songs with his high pitched squealing. And the worst part is that he is taking away solo time from Leroi who needs to be heard from more. Leroi did next to nothing tonight, which I really didn't like. It was pretty amazing seeing Trey come out of nowhere though and like I said the crowd collectively lost their minds, it was deafening inside when he came out.

Sucks to hear about Some Devil. I was really interested when I saw it on the set list. And Trey on LIOG is very cool, can't wait to hear that. And I agree, Rashawn needs to go, immediately. His moments are few and far between. Good review man

I was excited to hear the full band SD, I thought it would be cool, but about half way through I realized it really doesn't need anything else. Its a perfect song as is.

Woah, I totally agree with you. it just doesn't fit. It's meant to be a Dave solo tune and should stay that way.

I just like the fact that they are trying new things. Adding the band to a minimal song, adding the band to what figured to be Dave solo or Dave & Tim songs, bringing back a song everyone pretty much assumed was dead, a couple true segues and jams, etc. It seems to me like they aren't quite as much on auto-pilot as they have been the past couple years and it seems like the band is giving a bit more of the creative control back over to Dave which is how it should have been all along. But maybe that's just me.

Although it's interesting to hear/see a full band Some Devil, I gotta say the drums make it sound to cheery. This is a sad bastard song if there ever was one.

I definitely agree with that. Dave does seem to be taking control again with song writing. And the full band SD wasn't bad from a musical standpoint, everyone's part sounded ok. I just think the overall feeling of the song resonates better when its just Dave.

I'm back and forth about it.. I actually really liked the muted trumpet.. I've allllways loved the sound of a muted trumpet, thought it fit nicely. However, the tune should stay Dave solo. In some interview awhile ago wrote that record mainly for the fact that he felt that those songs wouldn't fit right with DMB. Although, I always thought Dodo would've been awesome full band.

i ended up going last night, sat in a great spot with chairs, a cooler, and a pizza with a bunch of friends and just listened outside. we were literally ten feet from the fence. i wasn't paying 80 bucks for a lawn seat.

who else from the boards was there besides me and gianni?

Good call on that.

I'm pretty sure Buffy was there, too.
