Viewing Forum Lists

I have no idea what the technical jargon might be for what I'm about to describe, so I hope that what I say is clear. I'd really like to see some changes made to the way that forums are listed in terms of their "you have read these" or "you haven't read these" status. Sometimes I'll access the forums, and read a few posts in a single board, and then have something else to do. Even though there are more new posts to be scrolled through and topics that are still orange, sometimes I just need to leave the boards even with the new posts still unread. What I find frustrating is this: all those posts that were marked as "new" instantly go to "you have read these" when I leave the boards, even if I haven't read them. This can make matters more than a little confusing and tedious. Is there any way that this could change. Would it be possible to make it so that discussions and forums are still marked as new, even if you've logged in to the boards, read a few posts in other topics, and then exited the boards??
