Other Bass Players

Topics about musical instruments other than guitar should go here. There's bound to be a Carter, LeRoi, or Yo-Yo Ma out there.

Other Bass Players

Unread post by GSR » Wed Jan 04, 2006 6:51 am

So, I've been watching my Rising Low dvd rampantly lately, and I was thinking that there are tons of other bassists out there that are kicking ass besides the ones we gush about here on a daily basis (Fonzie, Vic, Les, etc.)

So what i was wondering was, who are some other bass players you guys recommend that we give a listen to? I've got a couple new albums i want to buy to check out some other bass players, like Mike Watt, Joey Arkenstat (bwaha), George Porter Jr, Rocco Prestia, Tony Levin, as well as getting some more of the godfathers, like bootsy, who i've heard banter on vic's records but don't have a lot of his own recordings. All guys I've heard a few tunes from and love 'em, and i'm looking for more of their material.

So what do you guys think? Who're your other favorite masters of the low end? 8-)

(Note: through my own luck, i now have 3 copies of Rising Low and i'd be more than willing to sell one of the two extra copies to you guys. Trust me, if this dvd doesn't inspire you as a bassist, nothing will. it's an essential.)

stanley clarke has played all over, hes a big name. bobby sheehan is a guy i really like for his stuff with blues traveler, and their new guy tad kinchlah.

but two of the guys i like the most out of any bass players are james jamerson and nathan watts, two guys who have done a lot of motown stuff. jamerson played with the temptations, marvin gaye, the supremes, and stevie wonder. watts was the primary guy for stevie wonder but jamerson did tracks such as "i was made to love her"

also, tho he gets a lot of listen, flea is really good. hes straight up good. not just slappin either, hes got great melody type lines as well (see: Soul to Squeeze)

then there is john paul jones, who can play more than just bass, and kicks ass.

and of course, sir paul...i heard he could write songs too

Michael Manring is the shit with a capital S. Does anyone have his new solo album, Soliloquy? I can't "find" it anywhere. I have the book of flame, it's intense.

I love stanley's electric work, haven't heard any of his upright stuff. School Days is such a good song, I've learned the main riff but that's all i've attempted. I find his stuff is pretty good to jam along with, even if you don't know how to play a song, i've come up with some pretty cool accompanying grooves while listening to The Bassic Collection.

Les debuted two new songs with his Fancy Band on the 30th and on New Year's eve. They're so damn good. i think i'm gonna upload them both right now.

Quality's pretty good. A lot cooler if you know what les is saying.
Phantom Patriot, 12.31.05
One Betta, 12.31.05
The Bullboard wrote: Phantom Patriot, by Les Claypool.....lyrics!
from Les' personal cheat sheet.........

creeping ever creeping
like a fox in the night
turning wrong into right
he only works alone

with a crossbow on his shoulder
and a saber at his side
some random guns and knives
his mask, as white as bone

the phantom patriot comes to save the day

moving thru the compound
with a formulated plan
there to help his fellow man
at this decisive point and time

the bohemians at the grove
dont see it quite the same
smelling danger is his game
they dub his quest a crime

the phantom patriot comes to save the day

searching for his quarry
thru the elite redwood maze
with provisions for the days
and nights he must remain alert

and though its not intended
our hero is soon aprehended
with "phantom patriot" in sharpie
written boldly across his shirt
The Bullboard wrote: One Betta, by Les Claypool.........lyrics!
also from les cheat sheet of lyrics...was lucky enough to snag this too....

old silk johnson
cruising up mighty fine
got a brand new cadillac

his buddy conrad smith
rollin' down the line
got last years cadillac

johnson say " hey smitty boy...
whatche think of my spanking new cadillac?"

smitty just rolled his head back
look him in the eye
"thats a mighty fine cadillac.......

but ima-gonna-get-me-one-betta!"

remember old kruschev
he was riding high with his sputnik satellite
he told us yankee boys he was gonna fill the skies
with that sputnik satellite
he said "hey Dwight D. I.........
what do you think of my sputnik satellite..."
Dwight just reeled his head back
Said "thats a mighty fine satellite.........

but ima-gonna-get-me-one-betta......."
