mmmm.....question

Topics about musical instruments other than guitar should go here. There's bound to be a Carter, LeRoi, or Yo-Yo Ma out there.

mmmm.....question

Unread post by NoNotThat » Fri Jul 25, 2003 9:25 am

okay I don't want to sound ignorant of other instruments or anything...but I am.
My brother came over last night (i have no shame: check out his band hehehe[look for moss]) and (he's the sweetest thing) brought me a really old slide guitar. I can find the tunings and everything online, but for starters I haven't the slightest clue how to use it, and I was wondering if anybody had any tips or anything.

I have little knowledge of how to play a slide guitar but I have seen them used. First off you need a slide. Then you get your open tuning. Then you slide your slide up and down the neck to get the chords you want. It's kinda like having a bar chord right there. Like say you're using open E tuning, if you put the slide on the first fret you would be playing F. Other than that, you'll really need to just experiment.

don't forget about the fact that you need to play it by laying it face up on your lap... and sarah, is it a dobro or a lap steel guitar?

when you play any kind of slide there is an important technique you must be aware of... first of all, since its a lap steel, place the slide on your index finger, then, when you lay the slide down of the strings, place your remaining fingers of your fretting hand behind the slide... this helps hold the strings down and keeps a whole bunch of notes from being played at once...

you mean the slide? even so, you should be able to lay some finger behind it (which is the important part of what i said, the other stuff was just secondary)
