Question for listening to amp w/ headphones

Unread post by DJR » Tue Jul 22, 2008 1:05 pm

in theory, this should work, right?

guitar -> amp -> XLR w/ 1/4 cord -> female/female coupler -> 1/4 to 1/8 adapter -> headphones

my amp doesn't have a headphone jack, and it's line out is XLR, but when i plug all of that together, i still hear the sound from the amp, not the headphones

Line out usually doesn't mute the amp, hence why it won't work.

How many channels does your amp have? I know with my Marshall AS50R (acoustic amp), I have dual channels, each with an independent volume control, and then a master volume control. The Master works independently from the line-out, so only the separate channel volume controls affect the line-out, i.e. if you turn the Master down, you'll still get signal from the line-out as long as the separate channel controls are still turned up. With regards to cable connection to the line out, I'm not quite sure, it still might not work.

If that were the case, he would be hearing sound coming from the amp and the headphones now wouldn't he?

Umm, no. The master will turn the amp all the way down, but because the separate channel volume controls are still up, turning the master down doesn't affect the signal from the line-out.
