lyric writing
Need a bit of help and advice. Should they be written in a poem like form or like a story and easy to understand.

it's your song, it can be whatever you want.Dead Dawg wrote:Need a bit of help and advice. Should they be written in a poem like form or like a story and easy to understand.

since the others have been a little vague, let me see if i can help. i think the most important part of a song is the message or main point of the song. i would try and write in which ever way you feel most comfortable (i.e. short story form, poem...). just get what you want to say down on paper and then doctor it up in whichever way you see fit. i can't tell you how many song ideas i have rattling around my dome-piece that i have yet put on paper and along with that how many i've lost for just that reason.

When I write a song I focus on something that I feel extremely passionate about. Then I put the pen to the paper and just write my feelings on it. After that I do some major editing until I get what I like. Usually I'll edit a song in upwards of 100 times until I get what I like. Even now I look at some of the songs I've written and want to edit them more.
Could I have been dancing nancies?
Lyric writing for me is telling a story and a story has a beginning, a middle and an end. It doesn't have to rhyme as long as the melody you develop with it is strong enough to hold up the lyrics and keep the listener interested. If you look at Dave's lyrics as opposed to a top forty song, you'll notice that without the strong melodies that Dave and company develop the lyrics themselves don't appear to have much structure. However, they fit perfectly within the framework of the melody and that makes all the difference in the world. If you want to develop your lyrics freely and not put limits on yourself you have to have strong melodies. Unfortunately if you don't have a recording contract or a publishing deal you won't find the same freedom in writing like Dave and other songwriters enjoy. In order to establish yourself you may have to fit the mold that's out there first to get your foot in the door. A clear story with a beginning, middle and an end, with a lot of imagery. Top forty stuff... 8)
