#40 cover/rewrite
Ok here's the deal. Ever since I heard #40 it became my favorite dave song. But as most of you know it's a song that is always changing and is hardly ever the same twice. Without having a studio version to base official lyrics off of, we are stuck just to pick a version (Yoshi's is probably the best out there lyrically.). So in realizing this, I got pissed of and decided to rewrite it lyric wise. Now don't jump the boat yet, they are still Dave's lyrics. What I did was I went to the DMB almanac and printed out the lyrics of every single #40 performed and picked out lines and stuff that I liked and used those and rearranged them so as to make since when put together (Somewhat...). The first verse is a conglomeration of what I described previously, where I preatty much copied and pasted lines here and there and made a unique verse. The first chorus is strait from yoshi's, and the second verse is also strait from yoshi's. The second chorus is parts from yoshi's put together and then after that it goes into a verse that is a conglomeration and then ends. So check it out, this is my #40 cover and although the lyrics are redone they are all 100% Dave's from differnt times he has played the song, just with my twist on it to make it into somewhat of a complete song, at least how I would like the song to go. Enjoy and let me know what you think. I did the recording more for the sake of you guys being able to see how what I wrote fit in, there are alot of problems in the recording... I've also typed out my lyrics below.
edit- I would like to point out that on the main part I change up the rythm a little bit at parts in interludes and do a little more emphasis on picking, just something I like adding, I know that's not how dave does it...

Table turns again
You my friend
I begged in time we'll fall apart and
Then we all could start again right
But you belong with him
Like Time Itself
Still I can't deny that in your eyes
I find solace I find quiet there
I beg you anything
When the heavy weighs on you
Please remember you and me
As children laughing free
And dream my times to hold
And she's gold
And you will Laugh about the times that passed us by
Lead me on the way
I'm ok
And I think of all the things we ties ourselves down
Within those days
Lately things have changed
And rearranged themselves
Oh and preassures on
Pressures heavy too
Heavy to you and me
While away
Then you leave back and smiling
on you
most everything you do for me I say
And the while lets make away
And feel the warm
In the middle of this strom with you with love and through
Angel
Share the time again
I spend with you
A friend is always good to have
But a lovers kiss is better then angels raining down on me
I dream of you at times, when you're by my side
Dream you're not just like you are
So troubled and doubling my pain
Just with a grin or tear
You shed for me
I wish that I could climb, inside your mind
And spend some time in there
I'd hug and hold you, and mold you into what I'd like
But no I can't do this
Just a kiss
To spend the while by you
And a familiar smile and voice
While away
Then you leave back and smiling
on you
All this trouble for a kiss from you I do it
And then you come up smiling
And I'm thrown
Until I get a little strom with you I do it
Always
The road to you is long
And I've been on it for a while
But I need to rode away
I'll take a break
Oh the song's the same
Games we play
I kepp you company at night
Whne times aren't bright
And so I'm here with you
And all I do is pray
That I won't be without you anytime soon
What men'll do
I dream the way that life is here
Always
And again for you
Waiting
It will be you until the end with me
Always
My friend
Always

okay. first let me say i think this is one of the coolest ideas i have ever seen on this site. and i give you mad props for that. but now for my critic i just have two things to say, in terms of the way you played the song, i feel like you didnt emphasize the base notes enough. i know that when i heared dave tease this song at the gorge this year, just hearing those 3 notes ( the C, B and F) give me chills, i would have liked to hear those a little more clearly. also, and like i said i think this was a very cool idea, but for me personally #40 will be like this untouchable song. IMO it is one of the most beautiful ballads ever written, and the fact that dave plays it so rarely, especially in full, adds that much more to it. it is like the Holy Grail of songs and for me personally it is a song i wouldnt play for anyone other than myself, unless i KNEW they understood how huge it is. thats just my two cents, cool idea though!

Ya i can see what you mean. I relate to the song in alot of ways, but it's just that I can't seem to find a recording that I like all in all, Yoshi's is the closest but still there are part in it that just bring it down for me, and that's why i redid it. I guess it's more for my sake so that I can play a version of it I like if I ever want to play it. I'll work on the bass notes and see what comes of it.proudestmonkey41 wrote:okay. first let me say i think this is one of the coolest ideas i have ever seen on this site. and i give you mad props for that. but now for my critic i just have two things to say, in terms of the way you played the song, i feel like you didnt emphasize the base notes enough. i know that when i heared dave tease this song at the gorge this year, just hearing those 3 notes ( the C, B and F) give me chills, i would have liked to hear those a little more clearly. also, and like i said i think this was a very cool idea, but for me personally #40 will be like this untouchable song. Ya that's from Yoshi's, I thought it was a studio version the first time I heard it too, it's just a good recording from a live show and someone faded it in and out so you can't hear to crowd. But ya from my knowledge you probably have the best version of #40, you can't beat yoshi's...globex wrote:http://www.globexdesigns.com/40.mp3

wow this is a really good idea
This song means alot to me, as I see it does to alot of you. I got shivers as soon as the guitar started to play. I think your voice needs to be louder, sometimes it gets lost in the guitar. When you sang 'annngel' it sounded great, keep up the good work and thanks for posting.

If you guys like it, i can give this another shot. I did this in my dorm room with one mic for the guitar and voice. I can redo it in the studio sometime and do alot better job, especially on the voice. I took the first take of the guitar and just ran through and sang th vocals once so I can definantly do better, i'll give it a try on the nice equpiment sometime this week if I have a chance, get this better quality. It will probably take a while for me to get a voice track down that I'm happy with because alot of this song is out of my vocal range, especially the part where I go to the chorus (then you leave back...), I got lucky and hit it the 2 times I did it, but definantly not a song I should be singing on, maybe I can tune down half a step and do it or something, we will see. Glad you guys like it.

I totally understand what you are saying, this is just one very good example of why DMB's music is so appreciated, it moves you.proudestmonkey41 wrote: just hearing those 3 notes ( the C, B and F) give me chills
EDIT:
Generally I don't think much of re-writing someone else's song and even the phrase "re-write" seems odd since you didn't write it in the first place and Dave never finished it.
That being said I liked it man, really. I do agree that the core of this beautiful song lies in the strong bass notes.
Good job, hope to hear more.
