Buzzing string

Unread post by jtdevan » Fri Apr 18, 2003 10:01 am

Hey all, quick question for ya.

When I play a B note on my high e string (7th fret), it makes this weird, high-pitched buzzing sound. The top five strings are fine, but this string appears to be hitting the fret when I depress it, causing it to buzz. But when I play a note a half step higher, and the one a half step lower, it sounds fine.
I've had this guitar (Yamaha!) for almost five years now and I think it may need some neck adjustment.

Let me know what you all think.

It most likely either needs a truss rod adjustment or a fret dressing. Either one can be done by any local luthier or guitar maintenance shop. They do it all the time, particularly when the seasons (read: weather) changes.

ok so there are a few reasons this might be happening. First, check the bend of the neck. look down from the headstock to the body. it should be straight. or slightly curved to the front of the guitar. there should be no up and down curve. that should be straight. if there are any weird curves then the neck is wapred. this is very bad. very bad. in fact if this is the case then try and convince yourself it is something else. you don't want a warped neck. as it is a yamaha it would not be worth having fixed.

second, if it is straight as a board it may need to have a little curvature toward the front. this is a simple truss rod adjustment and can clear this up.

third, it may be an uneven fret. this isn't my likelyest idea cuz it is only the one string but it could be. you should be able to slide a peice of paper between the string and the next fret up from where you are fretting the string. (wow that is a confusing sentence but i think you got what i mean.) if this is the case you'll have to get the frets redone. this isn't too expensive but if it's just a little buzzing it may not be worth it.

i have some bussing around the 14th fret on my guitar and to be honest i just play around it. it hasn't been worth to fix. when all is said and done i think you should just bring it in to a guitar store and have them checlk it out.

Thanks fellas. I don't think it is too serious, simply because it is only one string and one fret. I play mostly rythm guitar anyway, so it won't really affect me. And I am hoping to get a Taylor for my college graduation in June :D

But in the meantime, I might ask one of the guys at Guitar Center for their opinion.

Random movie quote to make you seem hip and "with it": I'm thinking about getting metal legs. It's a risky operation, but it'll be worth it.
