Excersizes to do, songs to learn, etc. I wish that my guitar skills were good enough to pull out and show off at times. I've got bits and pieces of lots of DMB songs down. But I really haven't put together any full songs. Maybe I should start on that. Whatever. I know a good deal of theory and such from bass, so just tell me what I need to do in terms of drills, etc, that would help. It would be much appreciated.

I would definitely work on getting whole songs down. Especially work on the transitions between different guitar parts. Granny is a good one to learn. I think some Oasis is good to learn basic chord progressions. I don't know how new you are to guitar, but you were being pretty vague.

deffinatley learn to put the bits of songs you have together. I remember when all I knew were parts of songs, then I started to just learn the whole song and be able to play them through smoothly, it really helped and you start getting better very quickly and put a lot of songs together.

If you dont have a basic knowledge of guitar you should. At least know the open chords, power chords and barre chords. I dont really do exercises or know theory. As far as exercise, just play the songs you know, if you know them well try something more challenging.

what kinda stuff do you want to do with your guitar? for example i have a buddy that only plays to impress girls so he just learned a whole bunch of chords and got good at makin lyrics up as he was strummin.

I've just been playing dave stuff. I just learned the 7 or so main open chords. changing through barre chords gives me fits, but i can do open chords fine.

It all depends on what you want to do. There are guitar prodigies that don't sing, but play amazing guitar. There are amazing vocalists who never write their own tune but have amazing pipes.

Myself, (that's all I have to base this own) I play my own shit to my own tune and I do my own thing. Some people will like it, some don't . Some wave their hats, some turn their backs, it's all the same.

As long as you challenge yourself you'll be fine. I mean, do you recall when you first played a chord or a riff. It's very enlightening and a great feeling. Whatever moves you enough to make a song is good enough. Whatever inspries YOU is good enough.

Someone is needed to fill EVERY job out there. MOST people will only watch a performer, and the few that actually do it are usually copies or second generation mimics, those who do, usually from the heart, orginally are the ones that are remembered.

I could take years to get it down, but once you do you'll be god.

Alright, on a more useful note....learn some commonalities. Like the chords dave uses for the verses in grey street, the chorus for tripping billies, and the "old and wise, with clouded eyes" on granny. Learn the songs that have similar things because then you will learn to transition faster, know more complex songs, AND you'll learn basically 3 songs for the price of one.

like them or not, you're going to need to learn to play barre chords sooner or later. the only thing you can do to get better at them is to practice, so a little drill you can do is a simple box drill that'll help you with barre chords. start with one barre chord, slide a couple frets over, move it down, and then move it back over, bring it up, and start again. as for your problem with dave, the best thing you can do is take the songs you know parts of, and just devote as much time as needed until you have the song down pat. learn the song in sections, and then put it together. learning whole songs will increases your comfort with dave chords so when you see the same chords in different areas of the fretboard it won't be a problem. it takes time and practice. cheers.
