Progress

Unread post by czech » Mon Mar 28, 2005 6:57 pm

OK, so about a year ago I couldn't really play one complete dave song. I had no style, and I couldn't just jam out shit on my own.

Out of nowhere this past week I learned how to play while I sing. It just clicked and I was playing and singing just about every song I know, it was weird, but it definately makes playing music 100x more satisfying.

I can play moderately tougher songs now. Now it takes me about 1 day to learn a Dave song and practice it enough to where I can play it al the way through.

And then last night I was playing and just jamming out on my own making up crazy changes between song I know and just other riffs and shit.

So ya, i'm just stoked that I am FINALLY getting better.

yeah, I hit that stage a while ago, since then Ive hit a brick wall reinforced with steel garters, I havent improved at all in the last 6 months, I actually stopped playing nearly as much as I used to because I just got bored. I need to get myself out of the rut and learn some new shit or something. Congrats on things finally "clicking" for you though, it feels nice when it happens. Make sure you keep improving and doing new stuff or youll end up where I am.

That's the weirdest thing. I can't sing for shit. But i noticed when I am playing my guitar I can atleast stay in somewhat of tune because I have my guitar there.
I still sound like shit, but its a lot more fun to play and sing then to just play guitar.

I absolutely Love progress. I can't even explain how much I admire the "steps" of progression involved when doing something as challenging as playing the guitar. Congrats! WOOOO I'm pumped!... and sober.

It's definitely funner to play and sing at the same time even though I'm not that good of a singer yet and can barely sing over my guitar with my voice sounding half-decent. It's good that it clicked for you though, always a good feeling, I remember when I could finally get So Much to Say to sound like when Dave plays it, it's an awesome feeling.

I always heard that some people just can't and some people can so I convinced myself i was one of those people who couldn't.
My best friend RIPS on guitar, but he can't sing while playing the simplest of songs. So I guess I let him intimidate me into not giving it 100%.

damn, feels so good.

Yeah, do you guys get to a point where you think you can't get any better, so you have to put down the guitar for a couple weeks...and then pick it up again and just start taking off? then it repeats over and over

what made me get better was traveling in europe. I didnt have a guitar for 3 motnsh and did nothing but listen to music on my ipod, my ears got trained better and I kind of got away from my bad habits.

I wish I could train my ears, how long does it take? I have been playing since the beginning of December, and really started playing a lot after Christmas. I would have trouble telling people what basic notes and chords are.

Learning improv techinques is a pretty big wall to summit.
Forget about the reasons and the treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away

i wasnt sure if it was. This may sound weird, but I feel like I have just now become a guitarist. Now when I play i am thinkng what would sound good. 3 months ago if i tryed to just play i'd be trying to come up with a chord to play and itd sound liek shit, now I kind of know what sound i'm gonna get before I play it.
Make sense? probably not.

how long have you been playing? I'm going on 2.5 yrs...and while i'm good at some stuff (OK at improv, pretty good at soloing, "right sounding" chords, etc), i'm just now getting around to learning to sing and play.

You'd like chord theory a lot.

That's weird. I've been playing for about a year, and I absolutely suck at soloing/improving etc., but I can sing and play relatively well. *shrugs*
