again....HD28 vs HD35

Unread post by breyean » Sat May 08, 2004 4:55 pm

i bought a new hd28 4 months ago at guitar center. i noticed that it buzzed in several places and didn't perform well in dropped d tuning. it sounded really good, but the action and buzzing when played hard discouraged me. I grew discontent, and returned the guitar. I wanted to try an hd-35, but they were out of stock. The sales person ordered one, and told me i could compare the two without obligation. It took two months to get the hd35 in the store. he called yesterday and i went straight down to play it. it was in a sealed box, unopened. i broke it out and played it.
for those who often post a thread about how they compare, im telling you the hd35 is louder and really vibrates. some say the 3 piece back doesnt perform quite as well, but i disagree. it may be due to the shifted bracing, but it really sings and holds these long steady notes loudly much like the hd28v. it has a well balanced tone too. There wasn't any buzzing and the bridge/neck seemed to be more true. i've read where the hd 35 was too low in tone, but its actually quite brilliant. in summary, the hd 35 sounds about like the hd 28 except its louder, and it really vibrates more freely. if your in the market to buy one or the other, spend plenty of time with the two, and after a while, the differences will be clearly noticeable. Needless to say, i took the hd35 home. Also, to guitar centers credit, they were very patient, flexible, and very good when trading, ordering, and refunding, they did a great job.

HD 28 is probably the best martin you can buy without getting a custom guitar in my opinion. I personally want an HD35 because i love the bassiness it has.. but i think the HD28 is the way to go if you want a top end martin

I have tried both the hd 28 and the hd 35

out of them both, I like the d-28 the most. A perfect guitar all around, and no frills or special stuff, just pure basic guitar. I think it's a better rythem guitar then the HD, more focuses on the bottom end of the rythm. I just like the sound, and the feel was better as well. Try just a D-28 and decide then. As for sound wise between HD-28 and HD-35, it's not much, imo, so if you would only go for one of the two, the 28 is cheaper.
Yes, I am in a box

I have to agree with DMBFan63 on this one. I like the HD-28 a little better than the HD-35. I'm a huge fan of the 3-piece back, but the range is a little more noticable with the 28 in my opinion. But if I ever had a problem with one or the other if I had one, I wouldn't know what I would do. I don't think I would trade it in for the other. I'm one of those people that have to have the same thing if it doesn't work. Oh well, I'm anal like that ;-) But I'm glad that you like the 35 now though, whatever works for you is all that matters! :-)

You sure? I believe the HD-35 is cheaper then an HD-28.. i could be mistaken and thinking D-35 is less then HD-28 though

No, the HD-35 is about $500 more than the HD-28 if I'm not mistaken. Too lazy to look it up right now, but I am 100% sure that the HD-28 is cheaper ;-)
