Help with Playing...
Hey Im matt, Ive been playing guitar for almost 3months now, Im a huge dave fan, HUGE. I know roughly bout 15 easy songs i.e. Bartender, Kit Kat Jam, Halloween, Crash, etc... I have one problem with all the songs though. I have problems transitioning from chord to chord, its like I get all retarted and hafta set up all over again. Anyone got any suggestions that could help me get better at transitioning? Itd help alot!
Thanks,
Matt

they say use transitional strings ie just slide the fingers that stay on the same string from chord to chord instead of lifting them up. and that works a lot. but when you're first starting, i used to pick my hand up completely from the guitar and practice laying down my hand where it goes. this is good for practice only, it gets your hands used to the chord formations. don't do it while actually playing a song. hope that helps

I can tell you what helped me...Don't even bother strumming when working on transitioning. When going from chord to chord, hold Chord#1, then bang your fingers down on the next one. Keep doing it until your hand gets used to it. It takes a while sometimes, but it works. Also, as appsoldier said, look for common notes.

yea, you'll learn by picking up your hand and placing. you'll eventually build muscle memory though so just practice. I mean basically whenever you learn a new chord this will happen. I started playing the nature intro to trippin billies a month or so ago. I had to pick up my hand and place it over and over again. but within a week i could do it pretty fast.

They're all wonderful tips, right now Im trying it on Sone Jane Likes(really hard for me cause of my dilema) and I can already see improvement, Im jus moving my hand from chord to chord, making sure every chord is played good, and my hand is getting use to it and Im starting to play it faster and faster. You guys got any suggestions of other dave songs that would help me transition from chord to chord. Thanks Guys, Big BIG Help!!

just go through and look at songs with full chords, finding the easier ones like the chorus to bowa, ants marching, stay or leave, etc. start out slow, just moving from chord to chord and keep picking the pace up, like you're already doing. then start moving on to harder choruses, like lover lay down. best of luck.
