Playing The Stone off Listener Supported

Alright, I can play the stone, the intro, verse, chorus all of it. I have one problem though that I always run into on when I try to play along with Dave on the intro part. If you can play The Stone and have the DVD of Listener Supported, or even the cd see if you know what I mean. When he plays it the way he does it he makes it sound like:

Instead of:

I know that pretty much the same but its the rhythm, it sounds like he starts playing on the 2 not the 5, it sounds like he ends on the 5. Does anyone know what Im talking about, play the dvd/cd and listen and try to play along, its really messing me up, it sounds fine when I play it by myself but then it doesnt match up when I play it with the dvd, anyone know what I mean at all? its all on how you look at it - you can start on the 2 and end on the 5 of start on the 5 and end back on the 5. basically the 5 is the end of the riff and the 2 is the start - but sometimes he just starts on the 5. The way you play it doesn't change - its just how you look at it, or think of it. make sense? hope so

well i must disagree with gravedigger.

the 5 is at the start of the measure, you can think of it differently if u want, but realistically you have to think of the song in perspective with the band. if dave just played the 5 whenever he wanted, the band would always be in sync.
the 5 comes on the first beat of the measure, always.
the song is in 6/8, so maybe thats messing you up.

here is a break down:
if you count it out:

1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 5 & 6 &
5---2----3---5-5-2-3---2

(i had to put in dashed because it didnt recognize spaces)


the last 2 comes on the up beat, the very last note. so the 5 comes right after it and they mesh together...

thats why it can seem that the 2 starts the measure..but it doesnt

I am not sure if anyone mentioned this tip before, but here goes. I was having problems getting the rythem to the main riff. The part in the very beginning that goes. da da dada dadada da, because of the way the riff circles around, so after playing that first 5 fret on the fifth string the 2 fret on the fourth string is the note that sounds like the beginning of the riff; and the 5 fret on the fifth string the last note. For instance:

da da dada dadada da
2---3---55-----232----5

so try listening to the song, and get the rythem in your head. But leave off the first 5 fret on the fifth string note, and start with the 2 fret fourth string, then play it like above.

I hope some of you at least understand what I am talking about.

i'm no guitar tech, so i can't give you all this mumbo jumbo, all i can say is that there is deff a diff in listerner supported. when i play with him on other cd's or other live ones, its normal. on LS though, i always screw up the rythm. the advice i can give you is to slow it down just a little bit and really listen to the sax and drums to keep your pace. i think its at just a little bit of a slower tempo on LS. good luck with that

yeah the slower temp may be your problem. and graves is right, listen to the sax. in the intro, leroi always beings that low sustained note the same time dave playes the 5....maybe that will help

and also,

music theory is not mumbo jumbo, its a valued tool to learning and progressing as a musician!

With all this Stone talk, I figured that I should take a look at it. I just picked it up tonight and it's a great song, lots of fun to play! If you're having troubles with it, KEEP IT UP!! It's all about control.
