LIOG verse question

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

LIOG verse question

Unread post by fliggil » Sun Aug 17, 2003 10:48 am

After the D and the 42 notes, theres a muted slap, just curious how the best way to make that slap sound good...ive been playing for 9 months or so, and can mute strings well, like in the liog long jam, but i never really got down muting all strings and sounding good. thanks

i just keep my strumming hand moving in the same pattern, playing the muted strings like i would normally do, then just let go of the muted strings and keep going. :)

the best way to do it (in my opinion) is to do 3 mutes. it takes a lot of practice to make 3 mutes sound good, but trust me it sounds awesome. what i do is strum up for a mute, down, up with the emphasis mostly on the down mute. the last mute being up allows you to efficientely move right back into strumming the song. hope that wasn't confusing.

after the 4 2, i kind of slap my left hand down on the fretboard, i suppose my pinky is doing most of the muting... then i make 3 quick mutes and take it right into the next notes. I picked this up from listeniong to dave solo versions of the song, but he plays it a lot of different ways.

I bar the 2nd fret, but I'm not fretting it, I'm muting all six strings, and do three quick muted strums. I do the same on ants marching.
