I palm mute the E and A strings and it sounds good to me. much easier for me.

I think he's been playing it this way more recently. Even in the d/t tour he played it with mostly the barred F. On the Lost Acoustics disc 1, he uses the older sliding motion. The newer way is much easier and fuller sounding to me.
