Well, really, palm muting is only if you want the sound of doing a palm mute, it's really a sound technique, it can't really be used just to play softer. As for playing softly? Yeah, i dunno, it takes really expensive recording equipment to get the sound that everyone wants. If you go under a grand (especially for the whole setup), you're probably going to be disappointed. I'd go with the guitar.
