Not to fully contradict what Monkey said...but from what I've seen, Dave doesn't really mute with his strumming hand. If you want the sublties of his fretting hand.....all that amazing muting is done w/ that. The strumming hand lends to the muting by strumming a certain way, but he generally does ...

Thanks for the help. So for each of these three mutes it's done with the right hand? I've been trying to do it with the left side. If I bar my left hand I can get the sound but it's not the way Dave plays it. He just flails away and it's hard to see what is going on.

I'm talking about the slow and fast people stare parts...i know how to play them, i just don't know if the riff is repeated or if you play the verse riff after playing it once through..(if that makes sense.)

there are different answers depending...

I used to say the same thing about the same songs, it seemed like the melody was not completely structured over the chords....

but then after playing around with my own lyrics (especially on P.Monkey)...I started recognizing that there is a pattern to the lyrics and I now can find the balance ...

I explore a lot on how to combine or segue into and out of songs....
I add some other covers in here and there (kinda seems like Dave is doing this more as the years pass, I love it, it's awesome...)
