HUH? I put on gibson flatwounds on my archtop all the time. I tried the Dean Markley flatwounds for it, but just weren't that great, the only dean strings I don't like. Gibson, though, makes great flatwounds. I get them from my local guitar store.

I agree that Les Pauls are heavy guitars, but a lot of electrics are. My KH-602 is a tank, and pretty heavy. You more or less just condition yourself to the guitar and get used to it after a while.
