So Much To Say

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

So Much To Say

Post by dmfollower »

how do you all play s.m.t.s? i use my pointer to start the song of and then i hammer on the 55/6 part but i've read that dave slides up to it. then i don't use the 1,3,5 long stretched out picking, i always go back with my pointer instead of forward with my pinky on those parts. i love this song and can play it perfectly but i don't think i play it like dave does. any takers?

I slide up with my middle than hit the 3 high strings 5-5-5 (bar) with my middle than slide from 4 to 6 with my index, and hit the 7 on the d string with my middle hit the open A string than slide back down with my ring finger. That's how I do the riff.
good, and you?

im gonna try to walk you through this one step by step...
E:------5-------------------------------
B:------5-------------------------------
G:------5---4\6-----------10----------
D:---------------7------5--7--------7-
A:--------------------3-----x------5---
E:-3\5-------------1------/10---3-----

ok. this is obviously the verse.
start by doing the 3/5 slide with your middle finger. that will put you in line to bar the 5-5-5 thing with your ring finger. after you get used to that, youll realize that your first finger (or pointer, or whatever you wanna call it) is in a perfect place to hit the 4/6 slide on the G string. after that slide, hit the 7 on D with your middle finger. now for the verse, go on to the next part. for the other bit, dmbtabs says slide 8/. what i usually do is start a slide really high up on the neck, mute it, and let off the mute as i get to 8, and slide on down.
to continue the verse, do the 1-3-5 thing. im not sure what youre talking about, but id really suggest learning that chord. for one, its the coolest chord in existance, especially when you add fifths to is or whatever. second, it will make your stretching ability better and your hand much stronger. do the 1 with your pointer, the 3 with your ring, and the 5 with your pinky. same thing with the 3-5-7.
the song comes down to your ability to mute, getting the slides to sound right took me forever. just practice, especially on that chord. and heres the one i was talkin about thats so cool:
E:--0-------------
B:--0-------------
G:--6-------------
D:--9-------------
A:--7-------------
E:--5-------------
sorry, i just love that.
good luck, and if you have any more questions, ask.

mine is similar to gravedigger, but i play the xxx555 with the top part of my index finger.

Actually, I've played nancies like that, too for the (xxxx00)h(xxxx22) (if ya get my notation). That's the verse hammeron.

yeah, I do that for Nancies too. by the top part of your index, you mean the opposite of the tip, like closer to your palm right?

we'll use this!!

Yea, yea, it's a shitty drawing, but it only took 2 minutes, and it gets the point across.

hey waffe_house_jam, thanks for the walk-through. that is totally different from how i play it. i can do the 1-3-5 stretch, what i meant was instead of doing that play :
E:------5---------------------------------------
B:------5---------------------------------------
G:------5h6------------0---------10-------2--
D:----------7------- --------------7-----------
A:--------------------3-------------------5----
E:-3\5--------9/--1-------3/-----10---3-----3

ok, the 3/5 is with my pointer and i bar strings G,B,and E( last?/first?) also with my pointer using the middle and tip(see picture) of my pointer. then i hammeron to 6 with my middle finger and then hit 7 with my ring and then slide down, i think its techniqueally written as 8 but i always end up hitting 9 which sound perfectly fine, with my pinky. going into the fill i hit the 1 with my middle finder and the 3 with my pinky and then the open 0 and then i slide up with my ring finger and nail the dm using my ring and pinky fingers on the 10's and the 7 with my pointer. that is how i play the song. i thought i might as well type out the tab since you did the same. funny how people learn/teach themselves totally differently.
